Handwriting on the wall

나날이 떨어지는 Bush 행정부의 인기를 만회하려는 쇄신책으로 Joshua Bolten 이 백악관 비서실장 (White House chief of staff) 으로 임명되었다. 그는 백악관을 떠날 계획을 가지고 있는 staff 들은 기다리지 말고 지금 당장 사표를 쓰고 나가라고 공언하였다고 한다. 동서를 막론하고 이렇게 새로운 경영진이 들어오면 자신과 뜻을 같이하는 (또는 요즘 노무현 정부가 자주쓰는 Code 가 맞는) 사람들로 새로운 Team 이 구성되며 그 나머지는 새로운 Job 을 찾는 신세가 된다.

Handwriting on the wall 은 성경 구약의 다니엘서 5 장 5-30절 에 나오는 이야기로 Babylon 왕궁 촛대 맞은편 벽에 사람의 손가락이 나타나서 글짜를 쓰는데, 벨사살 왕이 그 것을 본후에 살해 당하였다는 이야기이다.

Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall, near the lampstand in the royal palace. The king watched the hand as it wrote. ... That very night Belshazzar, king of the Babylonians, was slain. - Daniel 5:5 -30

이와 같이 Handwriting on the wall 은 피할수 없는 불운이 닥친다는 것을 경고 하는 것을 말한다. 별로 지체할 시간이 없는 다급한 상황이므로 Handwriting on the wall 을 본 순간 빨리 그 자리를 박차고 떠나야한다. 그렇지 않으면 바빌론의 벨사살 왕처럼 그날 밤 그냥 죽임을 당하는 운명에 처하게 된다.
