American resolve

미국의 34 번째 대통령인 George W. Bush 가 연설할때 자주 사용하는 단어로 Resolve 가 있다. 우리에게는 “어떤한 문제를 해결하다” 라는 동사로 잘 알려져 있다. 하지만 Bush 대통령은 Resolve 를 “확고한 결의” 라는 명사로 주로 사용한다. 그의 공식 연설문을 찾아보면 적어도 두번 이상씩 “Resolve=확고한 결의 또는 신념”으로 쓰고 있는 것을 발견한다.

By attacking coalition forces, by targeting innocent Iraqis and foreign civilians for murder, the terrorists are trying to weaken our will. Instead of weakness, they're finding resolve.

And each attack must be answered, not only with sorrow, but with greater determination, deeper resolve, and bolder action against the killers. It is the interest of every country, and the duty of every government, to fight and destroy this threat to our people.

This is a day when all Americans from every walk of life unite in our resolve for justice and peace. America has stood down enemies before, and we will do so this time.

Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.
