Back burner

지금 미국의 가전기구 시장에는 지난 일년 사이에 삼성과 LG의 냉장고, 세탁기 등이 Amana, Maytag 등의 미국의 유명브랜드를 물리치고 고급 물건으로 자리를 잡기 시작하고 있다. 이러한 가전기구 중 음식을 익히는 취사기기는 우리 말로는 전자레인지, 가스레인지, 전기레인지, 오븐레인지 등으로 불리우고 있다.

“레인지 (Range) ”의 정확한 영어의 의미는 "A cooking stove that has an oven and a flat cook top with burners or heating elements." 로 레인지는 열의 대류현상 (Convection) 을 이용하여 간접적으로 음식을 데우는 Oven 과 열전도 (conduction) 현상을 이용하여 냄비와 불이 직접 접촉하여 음식을 익히는 Cook top 이 함께 일체로 되어있는 취사기구를 말한다. 정확히 말하면 우리가 쓰는 전자레인지는 Microwave oven, 가스레인지는 Oven 이 달려있지 않은 경우에는 Gas cook top, 전기레인지는 Oven 이 없을 경우에는 Electric cook top, 오븐레인지는 레인지에 달려있는 Cook top (또는 Range top) 이 도시가스를 사용할 경우 Gas Range 로 영어에서는 표현한다. 바로 이 Gas Range 의 Cook top 에는 대부분 네개의 Gas burner 가 있다. 앞줄에는 주로 강한 불로 끓이거나 지질 때 쓰이는 Front burner 가 뒷줄에는 은근히 중탕을 하거나 약한 불로 천천히 끓이는 (Simmering) Back burner 가 있다.

Front burner issue 는 지금 당장 처리하여야 할 발등에 떨어진 불과 같은 긴박한 상황이다. 계속 주시하지 않고 다른 생각을 하거나, 깜빡 잊어버리면 Front burner 에 올려 놓은 음식이 타는 것과 같은 심각한 문제가 발생한다.

Put something on the back burner 는 Priority 가 낮은 문제 (something)의 처리를 연기하는 것을 말한다. Back burner 에서 천천히 덥히는 음식과 같이 지금 당장 냄비의 뚜껑을 열고 들어다 볼 필요가 없다. 그렇다고 아주 잊으면 쫄아버리는 상황이 발생하므로 나중에 한번 들어다 보아야 한다.
