With a grain of salt

기원후 77년 에 출간된 Pliny 가 기록한 백과사전 "Natural History" 에 의하면 독약을 중화시키는 해독제는 적은 양의 소금 (with a grain of salt) 과 같이 복용해야 효과가 있다고 기술되어 있다고 한다. 이와 같이 확실한 근거가 없는 사실을 다 믿어서는 안되고, 조건부로, 회의적으로 받아드려야 할때 쓰는 표현이 “Grain of salt”이다.

그 친구의 조언을 그렇게 중요하게 생각하지 말고 회의적으로 받아드려라.

다음의 기사는 2004년 9월 8일 방송된 NPR (National Public Radio) 의 All Things Considered 라는 프로그램에서 발췌한 것이다. 태양의 먼지를 채집하려고 우주에 보낸 NASA 의 Space Capsule Genesis 의 추락사건을 보도하는 방송내용이다. 이곳에서의 a few grains of salt 는 회의적이라는 뜻이 아니라 글자 그대로 소금 한두 알이라는 뜻이다.

The Genesis space capsule crashed in the Utah desert on Wednesday after its parachutes failed to deploy. The unmanned probe, which held billions of solar particles weighing no more than a few grains of salt, promised potential clues to the origins of the solar system. It was not clear whether the samples had been destroyed.
