Semper Fi, my love

미국에는 여러가지 정치적인 Bumper sticker 를 붙이고 돌아다니는 차들이 많다. 내용을 보면 차량의 소유주가 어떤 정치적인 성향을 가지고 있는가를 알수 있다.

텍사스 어느 곳에 가면 그 곳의 바보 한명이 실종되었다고 한다
(George W. Bush 대통령의 고향은 Texas 가 아닌 Yale 대학이 있는 Connecticut의 New Haven 이다)

(W 는 지금 미국 대통령인 George W. Bush 의 Middle name 인 Walker 의 첫자로 41 대 대통령인 아버지 George Bush 와 구별하기 위하여 사용된다)

VIVA BUSH

앞에 서있는 차에 VIVA BUSH 와 함께 Semper Fi 라는 Bumper sticker 가 눈에 뜨인다. Semper Fi 는 Latin 어원인 Semper Fidelis (Always faithful) 를 줄여 쓴 미국 해병대의 표어이다. "Once a Marine, Always a Marine" 또는 이 구호를 직역한 “한번 해병은 영원한 해병” 이라는 한국 해병대의 정신과 일치한다. Fidelis 에서 파생된 단어로는 Osama Bin Laden 이 Islam 을 믿지 않는 미국의 기독교 신자를 부를 때 사용하는 infidel (이단자) 그리고 불륜의 남녀관계를 말하는 infidelity 가 있다.

Last month, at the grave of her husband, Michael, a CIA officer and Marine who died in Mazur-e-Sharif, Shannon Spann said these words of farewell: "Semper Fi, my love."
Shannon, I assure you and all who have lost a loved one that our cause is just, and our country will never forget the debt we owe Michael and all who gave their lives for freedom.
