Politically correct

“Politically correct” 는 소수에 대한 부당한 차별을 피하기 위하여 지칭되는 소수에게 불쾌함을 줄수도 있는 말을 공식석상에서 바꾸어서 표현하는 것을 말한다. 그러나 일반 대화에서는 대부분 소수에 대한 비야량이 조금은 섞여있는 미묘한 표현이다.

다음의 예는 동성부부, 신입생, 장님, 흑인들과 같은 minority 들을 완곡하게 표현한 Politically correct expression 들이다.

Johns Hopkins University has announced that, effective January 1, 1999, it will extend to same-sex domestic partners of faculty, staff and students the same benefits and privileges offered to spouses and their dependent children.

After classes have begun, each First-Year Studentwill have the opportunity to choose a faculty advisor from among her instructors. Students will receive a set of guidelines to help make this choice from the Office of the Dean of First-Year Students.
